The San Francisco Weekly posted an article on their political blog about a poll showing Attorney Kamala Harris leading in the race for California attorney general over opponent Assembleyman Ted Lieu. Which is certainly interesting.
But, not as interesting as the photo of Ken Watanabe (captioned as Ted Lieu), which accompanies the article.
The writer of the post asserts that his replacement of Lieu with a picture of Watanabe was intentional — a means of emphasizing that Lieu needs a to improve his voter recognition in order to win against Harris. The final sentence of the article reads:
Perhaps Lieu needs a little more recognition. After all, that’s not him in the photo atop this story. It’s actor Ken Watanabe.
But, it seems to me that there’s a little bit of the “Asians all look alike…” trope going on in this article. What? Lieu’s problem is that voters can’t tell the difference between him and the guy who played a Japanese guy pretending to be Ra’s al Ghul?
