A mere three days before the 14th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, the Sikh Coalition reports that 53-year-old Inderjit Singh Mukker —  a Sikh American taxi driver and father of twowas brutally beaten while called “terrorist”, “bin Laden“, and told to “go back to your country”. Mukker is a US citizen who lives in Darien, a predominantly White suburb of Chicago.

Mukker was driving to the grocery store in the evening of September 8th when the driver of another vehicle allegedly began shouting the slurs to Mukker. When Mukker pulled over to allow the other car to pass him, the other motorist then allegedly stopped his vehicle in front of Mukker, got out and approached Mukker’s car window. He then allegedly reached into the car and repeatedly punched Mukker in the face until the elderly man lost consciousness.

After his attacker fled the scene, Mukker was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for a cheekbone fracture, multiple lacerations and contusions. He ultimately received six stitches. He has now been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home.

Police are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime and have reportedly identified a 17-year-old suspect based on Mukker’s description of his assailant and his recollection of the attacker’s license plate. Police have questioned that suspect — who was hospitalized shortly after the crime for an undisclosed reason — and police intend to file charges when he is discharged.

33 Years after Vincent Chin’s Death, Our Common Cause Must be Racial Justice For All

A screen-capture from the movie “Who Killed Vincent Chin?”

33 years ago today, Vincent Chin died at the age of 27.

Chin had been in a coma for four days after being attacked by Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz. The two Chrysler factory workers reportedly said to Chin, “it’s because of you little motherfuckers that we’re out of work” — a reference to competition between American and Japanese auto workers, although Chin was Chinese American — moments before the father-and-son team fatally bludgeoned Chin with a baseball bat.

Justice was never found in the hate crime murder of Vincent Chin. Ebens and Nitz paid a $3000 fine for killing Chin. Neither man ever served a day in jail. (To learn more about Vincent Chin’s murder, check out Who Killed Vincent Chin?)

Fox News calls anti-Muslim profiling “a good start”, supports claim by citing Japanese American internment

Fox News anchor Eric Bolling was joined by four guests to argue in favour of anti-Muslim racial or religious profiling.
Fox News anchor Eric Bolling was joined earlier this week by four guests to argue in favour of anti-Muslim racial or religious profiling.

I don’t even know where to begin. I really don’t. So, let’s just start at the beginning, shall we?

Last week, Fox News anchor Eric Bolling of Cashin’ In organized what he dubbed was his “most controversial” segment yet: Bolling invited on four guests to build a collective argument asserting that it was “finally” time to institute anti-Muslim profiling. Oh, yeah.

Bolling wasn’t wrong about one thing (in the midst of being wrong about most things): this segment was certainly controversial. A few other words jump to mind, too — like, “underthought”, “ill-advised”, “fact-starved”, “racist”, and “oh dear God, why?”. This segment made headlines this past week because one guest, hedge fund manager and proud Ayn Randian Jonathan Hoenig, declared that it was time to profile Muslims because something-something-Hiroshima-and-Japanese American-internment. Oh, yeah.

And while this might be the most obviously offensive bullshit uttered in this concentrated five minutes of intense stupid, it wasn’t the only offensive bullshit in there. Not by a long shot. No, the whole segment was like a monsoon of offensive bullshit flooding from their mouths: a veritable torrent of racist verbal diarrhea (video after the jump).

Earlier this month, I posted about the Queens-area hit-and-run of Sandeep Singh, a South Asian American man who was run over by the driver of the white pickup truck pictured above after a series of racial slurs were hurled in Singh’s direction.

On July 30th, 29-year-old Sandeep Singh was standing on the street when the driver of the white pickup called Singh and a friend racist slurs, yelling out “terrorist” and “go back to your own country, Bin Laden!”. Singh, who is Sikh American, hit the side of the truck as it drove past. The driver stopped the truck and got out, and Singh’s friend says the driver was threatening them both and was holding something in his hand. Following a brief altercation, the driver got back into his truck, which is when Singh stood in front of the truck to try and get him to stay so they could call the police.

On surveillance camera footage, the driver can then be seeing accelerating his car and running Singh over, dragging him 30 ft down the street before Singh came loose from the truck’s undercarriage. The truck did not slow down or stop; Singh was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Now, local news are reporting that an arrest has been made.

Sandeep Singh, a 29-year-old father of two, was nearly killed in an alleged racially-motivated hit-and-run incident last Tuesday night in Ozone Park, Queens. Singh was standing outside of his 99th street office building having just had dinner at a nearby restaurant with his friend Baldey Singh,  when the driver of a white pick-up truck slowed down and yelled a racial slur at the two South Asian American Sikh men. According to Singh, who told his story to the Sikh Coalition:

[T]he driver… used racial and religious slurs against Sandeep, calling him a “terrorist” and telling him to “go back to your country.”

What happened next was captured by a series of surveillance cameras and it is horrifying; video after the jump.
