The UC-Santa Barbara campus is reeling today after a 19-year-old student was assaulted, beaten and gang-raped Saturday evening. Authorities are now searching for a group of three “Asian males” who orchestrated this organized and vicious assault, which occurred either on-campus or in the surrounding Isla Vista residential area.

From the news story:

The victim returned to her Isla Vista home Sunday after the attack and told her roommate and law enforcement, and she was treated for her injuries at a hospital.

Authorities were searching for a group of people only described as Asian males.

“Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for us to investigate sexual assault cases, but what’s very unique about this case is, we have a woman who was beaten and raped by several suspects who were working together, and that’s definitely very disturbing,” Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover told NBC4. “It’s a horrendous crime.”

The campus community was on edge after the attack, as investigators do not have any witnesses and aren’t sure where the assault took place.

Shockingly, this assault is reportedly one of two rapes that occurred Saturday evening. In the other incident, another UCSB student was dragged behind a car and assaulted outside a party in the Isla Vista area. This is also the second of two gang-rapes to occur on the UCSB campus in as many months: in the first, an 18-year-old student was raped by three men on the evening of January 18th.

On many campuses across this country, there is far too excessive a tolerance of sexual assault and other crimes. Assaults and rapes happen all too frequently on college campuses, and are often swept under the rug by university administrators more concerned with the university’s reputation than they are with seeking justice for the victim. These crimes perpetuate in no small part on an academic rape-culture that too often focuses on blaming or suspecting the victim, rather than on catching and prosecuting offenders.

Don’t let this be another one of those statistics. If you have any information on either of the crimes that occurred Saturday evening, police are urging you to contact 911 or to leave an anonymous tip at 805-681-4171.
